State board charges psychiatrist Gurmeet Multani with sexual abuse of patient

On December 10, 2009, the Medical Board of California issued an Accusation against psychiatrist Gurmeet Singh Multani, alleging sexual abuse, misconduct or relations, unprofessional conduct, repeated negligent acts, failure to maintain adequate and accurate records, gross negligence.

The Board’s document states that Multani treated patient “LE” from July 2006 to March 2007 and also treated her son and daughter. LE went to Multani for help with depression and sexual trauma. She disclosed to Multani during the course of her treatment that she had engaged in prostitution.

Multani subsequently asked LE out to dinner and she agreed. Following dinner and drinks, Multani took her to his office, where he engaged the patient in sexual intercourse. In the document, LE reported that Multani engaged her in intercourse many other times at his office, that he paid her various amounts of money for sex, including one occasion in which paid her $2,000 and that Multani had sex with LE on numerous occasions at LE’s apartment as well.

With another patient, “JR,” Multani is alleged to have prescribed a narcotic appetite suppressant following JR’s concerns about her weight, despite a 10-year history of opiate dependence and the addictive potential of the appetite suppressant. When JR complained that the drug made her hyper, Multani told her to continue to take it.

The document also states that Multani conducted a “check” of her weight loss progress that consisted of raising her skirt to expose her legs and thighs, rubbing and pinching the inside of her bare thighs, unzipping her skirt to observe her hips and touching her vagina through her underwear. During this “check” Multani made comments about JR being sexy. JR reported the incident to police that same day.

    • I will report on the outcome of the case, as soon as the California Medical Board makes it known. You can also go to the Board’s website http://www.medbd.ca.gov/ and select “Enforcement Public Documents” on the left. Then enter his last name and if there is a new document, it will be there. There probably won’t be anything for at least a couple weeks though.

      • Is there any update/information on this case?

      • Hi,

As of this morning, there was no further documents on the case posted on the website of the California Medical Board. If you want to monitor the case, here’s the link: http://publicdocs.mbc.ca.gov/pdl/mbc.aspx. Just entere Multani in the space that says “name” and see if there is a Decision or Order posted. Right now there is an Accusation only.

  2. So strange, I’ve been going to him for a couple of years and have never seen even an inkling of this type of behavior. What takes 3-4 years to register an accusation, out of curiosity?

    • The more likely explanation is that the complaint was filed long before the Board issued its statement of charges against Multani. I have noted that licensing boards, in their documents, will usually provide the dates the patient(s) was treated and when the alleged violations occurred but not necessarily when the patient or other person brought the complaint to the Board’s attention.

It is also possible that the patient waited a few years before filing the complaint. Perhaps they were afraid they would be perceived as “mental patients” and that their complaint would be proof of their “mental illness.” Perhaps they did not at first think that anything was out of the ordinary.

In the field of mental health, it is commonly understood that there is an inequality between the “professional” and the often vulnerable patient, who puts a great degree of (often misplaced) trust in the professional. Such mental health “professionals” have been known to exploit patient vulnerability for sex, financial gain, etc. I have frequently been appalled at the abuse some patients have endured, believing it was part of treatment or in their best interest, according to “the doctor.” So, sometimes these patients may take awhile to face the reality that they were exploited. Luckily for them, in many cases, the statute on administrative complaints (the kind made to licensing agencies) is several years.

  5. I HAVE A NECK INJURY AND I TRIED TO CALL MY DOCTOR TODAY FOR A REFILL OF MY PRESCRIPTIONS TO NO AVAIL. I SPOKE TO HIS UNCLE KULDIP MULTANI, OFFICE MANAGER, WHO SAID IN A VERY ANGRY VOICE THAT THE DOCTOR WILL NO LONGER AVAILABLE AND THAT I HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR. I HAVE KNOWN DOCTOR MULTANI SINCE 1996 AS WELL AS HIS FAMILY.
I SUSTAINED MY NECK INJURY IN 1990. I WAS SUFFERING WITH EXTREME PAIN AS WELL AS ANXIETY. I AM ABLE TO LIVE A SEMI-NORMAL LIFE BECAUSE OF HIS HELP.

WHY WAS I NOT TOLD AHEAD OF TIME SO I CAN FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR? NOT ONLY MY DOCTOR’S RESPONSIBILITY TO LET A PATIENT KNOW, IT’S ALSO THE RESPONSIBLITY OF HIS OFFICE MANAGER, EMPLOYEES OR DOCTOR ASSOCIATES. NO DOCTOR SHOULD JUST DROPPED HIS PATIENT(S)NO MATTER WHAT THE REASON IS? I KNOW HIS WIFE IS ALSO A DOCTOR AS WELL AS ASSOCIATE IN HIS OFFICE.

CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT IS GOING ON BECAUSE WITHOUT MY MEDICATIONS, I KNOW I WILL END UP IN THE HOSPITAL.

    • My son has seen Dr Multani for years, last month Dr Multani wrote me two months worth of my sons medications and said he will be going on a 6 month sabatical and that 2 drs will take over while he is gone.
I think I kept going to Dr Multani because he got us in and out fast, and my son is on medicaid so it is hard to find a dr close to home that will accept that insurance. I agree with you though because the office had no problem making me an appointment for the end of this month. I only came upon this site because the county sent me a letter from behavioral health stating we would need to find another psychiatrist, this made me wonder so I caled the office and the line is disconnected (thinking it was due to this weather I called another psychiatrist office and they are the ones to inform me Dr Multani surrendered his license)

  6. Is their a class action law suit against Dr. Multoni?

    Comment by Rachel — November 15, 2010 @ 5:35 pm | Reply

    • I have no information on that but and it is doubtful that there would be a class action against in individual by former patients. “Class” is an indication that all individuals in the “class” suffered the same general kind of harm, such as, let’s say, cars that explode when struck in the rear or tires that blow out at high speeds. You can do a check of court records online for Los Angeles County for $4.75. If you find anything, let me know and I will see if we can post it.

  7. i have been seeing multani for several years since when i realized i could not go any longer without treatment.i am bi-polar,i have severe depression, anxiety attacks, terrible mood swings, and also a string of serious physical maladies.heart attack at 39,i’ll be 42 in 5 days, thank God.just like every one else i recieved no warning and was cut off my meds.your not supposed to stop pysch meds like that. i am going nuts without my meds!i am in the middle of a disibility case,my lawyers are ready for my court case and dr. multani has lost my evaluation form that he had filled out, that may have won the case for me! i am waiting to see a new dr. but it’s taking way to long and no one will fill my scripts in the meantime. i have considered an attorney to sue multani for ruining my SSI case,to recover the monies that his misconduct has caused me to lose.if you were a former patient, please leave a detailed description of how this has affected you. AND IF YOU WERE INAPPROPRIETLY TREATED IN ANY WAY SPEAK UP IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT. REMEMBER COMMENT ON YOUR EXPERIENCE GOOD OR BAD.GOD BLESS.

  8. Awful treatment with this guy. He’d stand there with a prescription pad, ask my name and date of birth and what I was taking and how much…he never seemed to know…spent like two minutes. He would have written the prescription for anything I almost think. Never took more than 5-10 minutes for the original evaluation. They wanted me to go there once a month for med. check when every 6 months would have been fine.

    Comment by Steven — November 24, 2010 @ 6:05 pm | Reply

    • Man, no joke. He’d have 10 or more ppl waiting and they’d come and go within minutes, way under normal protocol. And as you say, name & info for meds. In my case(if u read my post below) he knew me so well that he’d just ask what I needed and I kid you not, I once asked for meds i never even took and he wrote it. I would say 90 pills when it was 30 I literally felt like I was treating myself and all he was to me was a licensed drug dealer. He belongs behind bars. He really does. He has to have thousands of patients and I can’t imagine that any less than 80% would have similar stories to tell. We need to file class action, I was put on meds that caused me irreparable damage and another that got Black Flagged in 2002 for causing sudden heart failure.

  9. I typed an entire page about this guy and it would not post!
He should never be allowed to practice again. Why does he still have an entire office of therapists working for him on Baseline in Rancho Cucamonga? He is earning passive income and I’ll bet his wife (an internist) is billing under her license.

  10. If anyone can help me. I got sent to collections from Dr Multani regarding uncovered medical visits from 2010. During these visits I had Medi-Cal and also insurance. On August 2010, I started receiving bills in the mail. Every time I paid one bill I got charged with other outstanding bills from different office visits. When I finally got the last bill, I told them why are they charging me for past visits and the invoices were not matching up, they said they were uncovered visits that it was my fault and had to pay up. I had paid them in the past for some of the visits, but when my bills totalled too much I said I would look into these charges. I called my ex husbands insurance company and found out they were billing me because they were out of network. The office staff did not tell me that they were out of network. I would have taken my son to a doctor in the network and who took Medi-Cal. It was their responsibility to notify me about this and failed to do so.
When I called Medi-Cal, they told me that I should have not paid any out of pocket expenses. The reason why i was being charged for these visits were for failed attempts to collect money from Medi-Cal and in both cases did not submit their paperwork in a timely manner. The insurance and Medi-Cal advised me not to agree to any charges. If there is anyone going through the same situation that I am going through, please speak up. We put our trust in this doctor to help our families and that is not fair what they are doing to us by charging us for things that were not our fault.

  11. Both myself and my fiance’ are prior patients of Dr. Multani. I recieved over 2 years of treatment from him for depression and anxiety. I ended up moving back to my home state of PA and I recently applied for SSI. He was the Dr. who knew my history and had all my medical records for my treatment of the conditions I suffer from. When I gave his name and address to social security to obtain my medical records they were unable to get them as there was no response from him or the office. That is when I looked into it and found out wha happened and that he lost his license. It is crucial to my case that I am able to retrieve my medical records and I have no idea how to do so. Does anyone know how or where I can get my records now that he is no longer practicing?

    Comment by Dawn Wright — October 17, 2011 @ 11:03 am | Reply

    • There is at least one doctor who took over Multani’s practice; I saw him a couple times myself. At the time, a bit over a year ago, this particular doctor was there in the evenings, not during the day. (Can’t remember his name, though.) All of my records with Multani, which consisted of treatment from 1990 to 2010, were still at the office. Call Multani’s office number (last time I called, the number had not changed) and talk with the office staff about obtaining your records.

  12. hi i started seeing dr,multani for my depression for my miscarriage and a bad relationship with boyfriend , when i mentioned my relationship was going bad he suggested i need his help and to come see him once a week which i thought it would help me with my depression. But then i notice something diffrerent when he would schedule my appointments, that he was getting a little too comfortable with me and i would ignore it because i truly thought he was helping me but he would always tell me to stay after hours with him which i thought it was odd but i kept going along with it because i really wanted the help that i neeeded so i looked alot because i didnt have no one in my life to help me with the stituation that i was going through i should have listened to my instinct’s when i knew something wasnt right about “DR.MULTANI” he started calling me everyday and he wouldnt talk about my depression he would tell me that i was beautiful that i needed to be with a wealthy man like himself. He would also invite me to dinner but i would tell him no because i didnt think that was appropriate. Then on another ocasion he had called me to see if i was going to make it to my appointment that day i had gotten into a really bad car accident and i told about it and he told me he would go pick me up and he take me to the appoinment , so he did and when i was in the room with him he told me that i should go to his house and spend the night there that he would take good care of me so i did . he started giving me wine he kept giving me more and more wine till i started getting a little drunk. he got close to me and told me that he had fallen in love with me and he started kissing me and things lead to another and we had intercourse and then when we finished 20 mintues he left he told me he needed to go “do something” i felt so uncomfortable that i called a taxi and left. i felt soo use that night that it made my depression even worse . then after that night he kept calling me but i woudnt answer his calls because i didnt want to know nothing about him. So one day he showed up at my appartment i told him to leave that i didnt want to know nothing about him . little did i know some of his patients that i knew told me similar things that happended to them .I hope that one day there will be justice for him to never get his license again, also one of my friends had told me that hes still working in the same office and that he wanted to see me. i never ever ever want to see or know nothing about this worthless person that ruined my life i hope no one ever makes the mistake of seeing this “so called phychiatrist”!

  13. I saw Gurmeet back in 2000 for first time when I was 22. This POS put me on at least 25 diff. meds over a 5-6 month period. I later found out from a REAL Doctor that not only should I have never been put on anti-psychotic meds; he caused PERMANENT damage. My Dad knew the owner in the office where Multani worked(his boss) personally and came with me to an appt. where Multani literally eyes rolled back in his head and he fell asleep. No longer did my family not believe me that this guy should NOT be a doctor. I am VERY happy to see he has been stripped of his license and he should be in Prison. I was in the process in 2006 to file suit against him but did not for reasons personal to me. I am not a violent person in the least but I had always wished for 5 mins alone with this dude, anything goes. I would have been doing HUNDREDS of other people a favor had I followed thru and started a claim. If anyone needs more info or more insight on this guy, please contact me. I saw him for about 3yrs.

  18. I was a patient of Dr Multani’s for quite awhile and I NEVER had a problem with him like this and I am a female. . I really wish the Medical association would give him his license back again. I’d seen him for years on two seperate occasions with gaps in between and I found him to be very plesant and NEVER out of hand wit me. I feel he has been accused unfairly. I feel also that sometimes doctors get accused falsly by some females because they are females and use sex to get the drugs they want and by intimidating a doctor. I like Dr. Multani and I NEVER once tried to pull anything like that because I NEVER would and because I ALWAYS found him to be very professional. I would be questioning the honesty and sanity of the women in these cases very seriously.Thank you for listening. bTW he treated me for major depression and ADHD… Miss Ronnie Patterson
