Maine medical board suspends psychiatrist John Matt Dorn

Filed under: psychiatrist, sexual exploitation — Psych Crime Reporter @ 11:51 am

On April 12, 2011, the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine summarily suspended the license of psychiatrist John Matt Dorn after reviewing information alleging that Dorn had engaged in inappropriate conduct with a patient.

Based on that review, the Board concluded that Dr. Dorn’s continued practice of medicine presented an imminent threat to the safety of his patients.

An adjudicatory hearing to address the summary suspension will be held in May 2011.

  1. I am not sure that I want to go public with this and include my name, but I want people to know that he is not innocent. I am not the person that wrote the letter that prompted an investigation, but I wish I had. I’ve been searching for a followup on his right to practice because I was one of his victims.

In the year that I was his patient in Maine, he was incredibly inappropriate. He kissed me on the lips often. He patted me on my buttocks a few times. Every time session was over, he hugged me tightly and for much too long of a time. At those moments, he was would often whisper, “Don’t be shy,” or “mmm,You feel so good.” He made comments about my clothes, and how I must be aggressive in bed. He would use foul language to describe the act of making love. He also spoke about pleasure he got out of taking pictures of women from his window. He always had a long lens camera in his office.

I am a survivor of sexual abuse and was seeing him for depression, anxiety and PTSD. I believe that he preyed on this. He knew I wouldn’t fight back, even though I wanted to. He knew that I didn’t think I had the power to say “NO.”

When I was late to work, I explained to my employer that I had trouble facing the day because of the actions of my psychiatrist that day. The next day, confused and disgusted with myself, I called a 1800 number- a help line. I needed clarity- I needed to be told that I wasn’t over-reacting and that what he was doing to me was wrong. They confirmed that he was inappropriate and asked for his name. I told her that I didn’t want to get into trouble, but shared his name. I never shared who I was. I also never knew if anything had come out of that.

When I that the Portland Press Herald printed that there was a complaint against him, I was relieved. I was no longer his patient at this time, but I was glad someone spoke up- even though I didn’t have the guts to.

I just want people to know… He has had many victims. I am one of them.

    • Dorn had his license suspended back in Pennsylvania when he was much younger. How did the state of Maine OK him to practice again? Answer: he probably went through some sort of “rehab” after which one of his psychiatric colleagues deemed him safe to see patients again. He will fight the State of Maine on this suspension with whatever legal recourse there is. I pray some slick lawyer cannot get his license back. He has addiction problems (sex and alcohol). His Ivy League wife will probably be divorcing him after this public embarrassment.

  2. Oh my God! I just read the comments above and I want you to know that you are NOT ALONE!! I too was a patient of Dr. Dorn’s and one of his VICTIMS!! At first I just thought he was just a “hugger” but soon came to realize he was just taking advantage of his female patients. I feel so guilty not having the courage to report him myself!

My heart goes out to you “L”! Thank you for being so brave to write this note!

      • My nephew went to him looking for help for his addiction. He gave his mother Adderall, she wasn’t even a patient. He asked my nephew if his girlfriend gave good blow jobs. He kissed his mother on the lips, and said what will you give me for this prescription? She said “I’ll give you his insurance.” She said “I’m leaving” and the door was locked and she couldn’t get out. He pressed a button by his chair to let her out. He tried to turn it onto her and said, “I’ve been here for 5 years and no one has ever made me feel as attractive as you do.” She said, “I’m sorry if I gave you that impression.” He said “Wait, don’t you want your prescription?” She said “No.”

  4. I too was quickly given a prescription for Adderall by this idiot!! He had me convinced I had ADD!!! I would like to know why the practice in Auburn didn’t research his background before hiring him!! Aren’t they also responsible for what we went thru with this horrible person?

    • Ochiltree/John M Dorn’s address was 246 Coombs Road, Brunswick,ME. Beautiful area, near ocean. This past summer,July 13th, 2012 I was alerted to a fire during Moxie days, Chief Sean Galipea, said there was a huge fire in Brunswick, that eliminated some of the fireman’s muster, because all VOLUNTEER firemen were called away, 13 departments called, one fireman injured. Heat and fire so bad, no one could probably get at real cause of fire???? Wife saying MS patient, john matt dorn (alias James Hitchcock Ochiltree) his name was not mentioned in the papers, got it from the Fire Chief in Brunswick, home destroyed and oh yah, he was not hurt, but alot of lives were/are damaged. He lied, he cheated and adderall, vicodin, and anything and everything else, including inappropiate sexual inuendos, truly hurt his patients. Too many other states, PA, Chicago, Ill, South Carolina. Who stops evil? only if the victims keep telling and allowing it not to happen again. J Henry

  5. Thank you for this information. This guy just contacted me from an online dating site. In his messages he was very complimentary and he suggested we contact each other via regular email. He gave me his email and so I did contact him. He responded and I noticed that his email had James Hitchcock Ogchiltree in the name line. So being the “Nancy “Drew” that I am I googled him and found this information. Thank you again for having this online. It’s scary that I could have been a victim. He sounds like a first class predator .

    • Glad to be of service!

From some of the reports that have come in, he does look like a shady character.

  6. With a rapid heart and tears in my eyes i am composing this message to all of you after reading this message. First of all i want to say that my heart goes out to all of you who so far shared and those of you who will continue to share your courage in healing your stories. my heart goes out to all of you. As for my experience with this perpetrator i was to go see him for ADD, ADHD, PTSD, Depression, Sleep deprivation, Sexual Abuse, Family Trauma, and Migraines. Like many of you have said i also can share how this perpetrator ( sorry, but i have a hard time saying their name ) i also knew of their camera as well of their unwanted advances they made towards me and fondling. Not only that i recall being asked if i would to pose for pictures at times in their office. This office was located in Auburn, Maine and when i would leave he would also take pictures of me with his zoom lens from his high rise office from me down in the parking lot and tell me about it the following session or as i would arrive and show me of me arriving. Like many of you i tried to reach out to many people such as his secretary about how i felt, my Primary Care Dr. as well as others and all i would get was shrugs or looks that i needed some kind of ” concrete proof “. No one would take my word for this because the perpetrator is a man and they thought since i am a gay man i must have been reading into this. So i never did anything to come forward. Now since i have heard about this the first time today from my current counselor i know my PTSD is in overdrive all over again as well so is my guilt because i feel that if i came forward when i had the chance maybe i could have stopped this from happening to someone else. God how i hate myself right now !!!!! i hope you all and anyone else reading this can forgive me !!!!!! i have to go now the keys are getting blurry and this is hard to type as you hunt and peck so perhaps i will type more soon. Sorry. – justin

    • Thank you Justin! I truly hope and pray you are okay! Yes, the Auburn, ME offices, that is where his abuse began and forwarded to the Cabot Mill Mall address in Brunswick and then to the address on Park Street, Brunswick,ME . Two years of lies, improprieties and deception. Clutching my arm, he said he was suicidal when it was coming out about him loosing his license. John Matt Dorn, saying, “It’s all lies!” The lies were his, all his, and the hurt all ours, our pain. Too many victims! And how many victims ? Thank you for letting us know we are not alone. JH
