Virginia counselor Mary Amtower placed on probation over substance abuse

Filed under: Uncategorized — Psych Crime Reporter @ 5:17 pm

On September 2, 2011, the Virginia Board of Counseling placed counselor Mary Amtower on indefinite probation for no less than one year with terms and conditions.

The findings of fact as contained in the Board’s Order state that during her employment at the Cascade Group (a private psychotherapy practice in Blacksburg, Virginia), Amtower fell asleep during counseling sessions. The document states that three clients contacted Cascade following sessions with Amtower, reporting that she had fallen asleep. Further, Cascade staff had confronted her with their observations that she’d exhibited slurred speech, swayed when she walked or stood, and inappropriate loudness in the lobby with clients.

An evaluation determined that Amtower had been taking the muscle relaxant Soma due to chronic pain and that she suffered daytime sleepiness due to poor sleep due to increasing pain. The document indicates that Amtower had a previous struggle to wean herself from a similar, addictive drug.
