CHARLES TOWN – A psychiatrist who pleaded guilty last year to having inappropriate sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl was sentenced to five years of probation Monday during a sentencing
hearing in Jefferson County Circuit Court.
Joseph Anthony Jurand, 61, of Shepherdstown Pike, Shenandoah Junction, was originally scheduled to be sentenced last month, but the hearing was postponed until Monday.
Jurand pleaded guilty Sept. 30 to one count of an indictment charging him with misdemeanor third-degree sexual abuse as part of a plea agreement.
The remaining counts of an indictment returned in May by a Jefferson County grand jury, charging Jurand with two counts of felony third-degree sexual assault, were dismissed.
Jefferson County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Hassan Rasheed said Monday that Jurand was also ordered to complete 500 hours of community service and will be required to register for life as a convicted sex offender with the states sex offender registry as part of the sentencing agreement.
Jurand is barred from having any contact with the girl or her family.
According to court records, Jurand met the victim while she was participating in a Shepherdstown community theater group.
